DHEA is a precursor to estrogen and progesterone in women and testosterone in men. It becomes those hormones mentioned but also has functions on its own.

DHEA improves:

  • Sexual function
  • Increases muscle mass
  • Improves mental acuity
  • Enhances mood
  • Improves immune function
  • Controls cortisol levels

Maintaining sufficient levels of DHEA can also decrease belly fat.

DHEA is also one of the first hormones to decline sometimes as early as age 30.  For some women, DHEA can help them generate enough testosterone on their own. Clinical history and blood testing will help us determine what dosage if any is required. Side effects are greasy skin, acne, facial hair in women, not men. These are “androgenic” side effects. I have seen them only infrequently in my patients and usually manage them by merely lowering the dose. DHEA is a wonderful pharmaceutical.

DHEA is a wonderful bioidentical health aid, but it must be micronized by a top-grade compounding pharmacy,  as it has so many contributions to metabolism, body weight, bones and immune function. You do not need to be in andropause or menopause to take it. We are, however, talking about prescription-grade bioidentical DHEA – not the consumer product you send away for or buy at the health food store. This is true for all hormones I discuss on this site. Hormone replacement therapy needs to be administered correctly in order to attain beneficial results.
